Which factors influence the choice of methods?

Methods must correspond not only to the topic of the work but also to the practical conditions under which it is conducted. Even a theoretically appropriate tool may prove ineffective if the researcher does not have access to the necessary data or a sufficient number of participants.

When choosing methods, the following should be considered:

  • the method’s suitability for the research aim and questions
  • the possibility of obtaining a sufficient amount of reliable data
  • access to respondents, documents, laboratory equipment or databases
  • the timeframe for conducting the research
  • the available financial and technical resources
  • the researcher’s competence in using the selected tools
  • ethical requirements and the need to obtain the relevant approvals


The selected method must be realistic and reproducible. Other researchers should understand how the research was conducted and, if necessary, be able to replicate it under similar conditions.


How can the reliability of the results be ensured?

The reliability of the research depends not only on the choice of method but also on its correct application. It is necessary to establish in advance the criteria for forming the sample, the data collection procedure, the methods for controlling errors and the methods of analysing the results.

For quantitative research, an adequate sample size, the validity of measurement instruments and the correct use of statistical methods are important. In qualitative research, particular attention is paid to the validity of interpretations, the transparency of the analysis and the accurate representation of participants’ experiences.

The reliability of the results can be strengthened through a pilot study. Preliminary testing of a questionnaire, interview protocol or experimental procedure helps to identify shortcomings promptly and adjust the tools before the main stage of the work begins.


Ethical aspects of selecting a methodology

If the research involves humans or animals, the methodology must comply with established ethical requirements. Participants must receive clear information about the purpose, procedure and potential risks of the research and provide voluntary informed consent.

The researcher must ensure the confidentiality of personal data, participants’ right to withdraw from further participation and the secure storage of the information obtained. Where required, approval from an ethics committee must also be obtained before data collection begins.


Common mistakes when choosing methods

One common mistake is selecting a method solely because it has already been used in other studies or is convenient for the author. Even a widely used tool does not guarantee a high-quality result if it does not correspond to the objective of the particular research.

Problems may also arise from an insufficiently justified sample, the use of unvalidated questionnaires, an inappropriate method of statistical analysis or the absence of an explanation for the chosen procedure.

Another mistake is using an excessive number of methods without a clear understanding of the function performed by each one.

The methodology section should demonstrate the coherent logic of the research. Each method should be linked to a specific objective and contribute to obtaining the data required to formulate well-founded conclusions.


How should the methodology be described in a scientific article?

The description of the methodology should be clear, structured and sufficiently detailed. The author must specify the research design, sample characteristics, materials and tools used, data collection procedure and methods of analysis.

The selected methods should not only be identified but also justified. If the methodology has certain limitations, these should also be stated openly. This increases the transparency of the research and helps readers interpret the results correctly.
