The Verkhovna Rada adopted draft law No. 10392, registered on January 08, 2024. From now on, severe sanctions will be applied for the use of ChatGPT artificial intelligence or misappropriation of the authorship of other people's works. We will analyze them in this article.
What is academic integrity?
As defined by the Law of Ukraine "On Education," academic integrity is a set of ethical principles and rules established by law that should guide participants in the educational process during learning, teaching, and conducting scientific (creative) activities in order to ensure confidence in learning outcomes and/or scientific (creative) achievements.
The requirements for ensuring academic integrity apply to the following scientific works:
- dissertations
- qualifying graduation papers
- scientific publications
- scientific articles
- reports in the field of scientific and scientific and technical activities
- textbooks
- training manuals
- other scientific and educational works.
What are the types of violations of academic integrity?
Here are the main categories of violations of scientific ethics, according to the draft law:
- alienation of authorship
- academic plagiarism
- attribution of authorship
- self-plagiarism
- fabrication
- falsification
- unfair assessment of learning outcomes
- not performing the task independently
- unauthorized assistance
- academic sabotage
- incitement to violate academic integrity
- institutional violations of academic integrity.
Sanctions for violations of academic integrity:
The listed violations are governed by the following response measures:
- educational measures
- bringing to academic and/or disciplinary responsibility
- responding to violations of academic integrity during competitions
- institutional response measures
Academic responsibility may be imposed on a person who has reached the age of 14 at the time of the violation of the Law.
