Many students think about choosing a higher education institution for more than one year, because this is a very important stage in the life of every future student. Today we will analyse what to look for when choosing a university.

Choosing and studying at a university has a great impact on a person's life. It affects the student's future path in life and future career. It often happens that, having chosen a university, a student drops out after the first year of study because the expectations were not met. Or, having chosen a university without due consideration, a student may find that the institution does not meet their requirements or needs. In such cases, students are often disappointed in their choice, withdraw and transfer to another institution, wasting valuable time. So what should you look for when choosing a university to avoid such situations?

1. Study programme.

Once you have decided on your future speciality, you need to familiarise yourself with the educational programme offered by a particular university. Based on this information, you can choose the study programme that meets your wishes and requirements.

2. The cost of education.

One of the most important criteria for choosing a higher education institution is the cost of education. This issue is individual and has no common solution, because each future student has different payment capabilities, so you should choose a university according to your financial capabilities.

State-funded form of education. To apply for state-funded education, it is important to carefully read the requirements of each university, including the required number of points, the number of state-funded places, and the deadlines for submitting documents. You should make significant efforts to prepare for the exams and submit all documents correctly in accordance with the established requirements to avoid rejection and increase your chances of getting a place on a state-funded programme.

3. Academic potential.

If a prospective student is interested in studying and plans to engage in research and/or teaching, then it is worth paying attention to the scientific potential of the higher education institution. This includes, for example, the presence of well-known scientific laboratories, research centres, opportunities to participate in research projects and conferences, financial resources, as well as the qualifications of teachers and their scientific achievements.

4. Technical equipment and learning environment.

Technical equipment and learning environment are important when choosing a higher education institution, as students study for at least 4 years. Modern classrooms and auditoriums equipped with technical facilities, as well as beautiful grounds, sports grounds, fields and courts, have a significant impact on the comfort and quality of student life.

5. Place in various rankings.

When choosing a higher education institution for further study, you should pay attention to various national and international rankings. This will help you make an objective assessment and choose the right institution.

For example:

  • The National H-index Ranking aims to assess the scientific productivity of scientists, research groups and organisations in a particular country based on the consolidated Hirsch index. The ranking takes into account the overall Hirsch index of the country's scientific institutions, using information from scientometric databases and platforms such as Scopus, Web of Science and Google Scholar.
  • Since 2004, THE (Times Higher Education) has provided reliable data on university performance for students, their families, academics, university leaders, governments and industry. These rankings assess the performance of universities on the global stage and provide resources for understanding the different missions and achievements of higher education institutions.
  • The ranking is from the Centre for International Projects "Euroeducation". When compiling the rankings, experts take into account current trends in higher education.

6. Absence of corruption processes.

When choosing a university, it is important to get acquainted with internal processes. By communicating at forums, with students and alumni, you can find out about the attitude of teachers to students. One of the important reasons for refusing to enter a university may be the presence of corruption processes.

7. Future employment.

Before applying to a higher education institution, you should read the information on student and graduate employment that can be found on the website of each university. This will help you understand the prospects for future employment and career opportunities after graduation.

8. Scientific events, international exchange programmes and internships.

When choosing a higher education institution, it is recommended that you familiarise yourself with its international activities, which may include various scientific events, university exchange programmes and internships. Such experience will contribute to the personal development of the student and will be a plus for the future career. Participation in such events and programmes provides an opportunity to broaden horizons, gain new experience and establish useful contacts and communications.

9. The possibility to choose the form of study.

For many students, it is important to have a choice of study modes, such as full-time, part-time, distance, full-time or part-time. Having such a choice can be a significant advantage when choosing a university, providing flexibility in the learning process and, for example, the ability to combine study and work.

Choosing a higher education institution is an important step on the way to obtaining education, which should be taken responsibly and seriously. Even if you have not yet decided on your future profession, choose a university carefully, paying attention to all the opportunities and conditions that the institution can provide you with.
