A scientist seeking to expand his or her research activities cannot do without writing a monograph. This is an effective tool that not only contributes to the development of a particular field of science, but also helps the researcher to improve their skills and advance in the scientific community. In order for a monograph to meet all the requirements, it is important to consider a number of aspects when writing and formatting it. In this article, we will have a closer look at how to write this type of work correctly and what researchers should pay attention to.

Monograph: what is it and what types are there?

A monograph – is a scientific work that contains an in-depth and comprehensive analysis of a specific problem, topic, or a particular aspect of research in a particular field of science. It is the result of a systematic study and research of a selected topic, where the author presents his or her research activities in detail: outlines the issues that have been studied, describes the methods and tools used, and presents the results of his or her own research.

There are two types of monographs, depending on the number of authors: author's and collective.

  1. An author's monograph – is a scientific work authored by a single researcher. He or she conducts the research independently and presents the results of his or her work.
  2. A collective monograph – is a scientific work written by a group of researchers. Each of them has his or her own area of responsibility and deals with a separate part of the monograph. The result of such cooperation is a coherent scientific product. If you would like to learn more about the peculiarities of collective monographs, please read our article on this topic.

What should be the structure of a monograph?

The structure of a monograph may vary depending on the requirements of the publishing house, educational institution, or research institution, but it usually has standard components that allow for a clear and logical presentation of the research work. A monograph usually consists of the following structural elements:

  1. Title page: contains the title of the monograph, the author's name, information about the publisher, year of publication, name of the research institution or educational establishment, and information about the author's academic degree.
  2. Table of contents: a list of sections and subsections of the monograph with the pages.
  3. Introduction: a description of the relevance of the topic, the purpose and objectives of the research, a literature review, justification of the choice of the topic, the scientific novelty of the work and its importance for the development of the relevant field of science.
  4. Main body: the main text of the monograph, divided into sections and subsections.
  5. Conclusions: results of the study, main results, practical significance of the work, recommendations for further research.
  6. List of references: a list of all sources cited by the author in the text of the monograph. Includes books, articles, dissertations, regulations and other scientific works used in the writing of the monograph.
  7. Appendices (if necessary): additional materials that support the main part of the work, such as tables, diagrams, graphs, mathematical models, documents, questionnaires, programs, etc.

How to publish a monograph?

The next stage after writing a monograph is its publication. There are several key steps that need to be taken, namely:

  1. Editing: check the text for grammatical, stylistic and semantic errors.
  2. Choosing a publisher: choose a publisher that specialises in your topic and has a good reputation.
  3. Formatting according to standards: follow the publisher's requirements for fonts, indents, links, etc. Often, one of the mandatory requirements of the publisher is the availability of the UDC – a classification index of the unique decimal classification of printed works.
  4. Submitting a manuscript: write a cover letter and send an electronic version of the manuscript. Also, do not forget to add information about the author(s).
  5. Review of the manuscript: Be prepared for the fact that experts will evaluate your work and may suggest changes.
  6. Publication: After the manuscript is accepted, sign a contract with the publisher and wait for the monograph to be published.

Writing a monograph is one of the most important stages in a researcher's professional career. It is not only an important prerequisite for defending a dissertation, but also significantly increases the authority of the researcher, contributing to his or her recognition in the scientific community.
