There are two main forms of training of highly qualified personnel in the higher education system. Postgraduate and doctoral studies are a prerequisite for anyone who wants to pursue a career in research.
Anyone who wants to devote their life to scientific activity must undergo training at such professional levels of higher education as postgraduate and doctoral studies. During their studies, future professionals learn new skills, research methods, choose a dissertation topic and conduct relevant research. Postgraduate studies
Postgraduate studies are the first step in the training of future scientists who prepare a dissertation research for defence to obtain a PhD degree. Students conduct their research in accordance with an individual plan. Postgraduate students continue their studies after completing their master's degree to continue their research and/or teaching.
Forms of postgraduate study:
- Full-time;
- Evening;
- Extramural.
Requirements of admission to postgraduate studies
There are a number of conditions for admission to postgraduate studies, including:
- A master's degree is required;
- Timely submission of the required documents;
- Passing the entrance exams;
- Compulsory writing of the Unified Entrance Examination (UEE).
Postgraduate studies have the following advantages:
- The possibility of teaching;
- Opportunity to write scientific papers and conduct research;
- Possibility of further work in research institutes or laboratories.
Terms of postgraduate studies
Students enrolled in a PhD programme must complete a 4-year programme. During this period, they have to attend all classes, pass current and final examinations. The entire programme prescribed in the individual curriculum must be completed by the postgraduate student, as well as the educational and scientific programme of the higher education institution.
Doctoral studies
Doctoral studies are the highest level of higher education that prepares candidates for the highest academic degree - Doctor of Science. Candidates who have a PhD degree, published scientific papers (including international databases), scientific achievements and results that need to be completed or formalised in the form of a dissertation, monograph, etc. may be admitted to study.
Forms of doctoral studies:
- Full-time;
- Extramural.
Requirements for admission to doctoral studies:
- Candidate of Science degree;
- Availability of scientific achievements that require completion and/or registration in the form of a dissertation;
- Admission to doctoral studies is on a competitive basis;
- At least half of the scientific publications on the topic of the dissertation must be published in scientific periodicals in the relevant field of research, in accordance with the number established by law.
Terms of doctoral studies
Future doctors of sciences are trained in doctoral studies for no more than 2 years. If a person has previously studied for a doctorate under a state order but did not complete their studies or was expelled early, they may apply for re-entry to a doctorate. Candidates for a doctoral degree must conduct all the research that is envisaged in their individual research plan.
Doctoral studies have the following advantages:
- Possibility to combine work and study if it does not negatively affect the writing of the dissertation;
- A scholarship provided on a regular basis;
- Retention of the right to perform official duties in case of failure in the preparation of the dissertation;
- Possibility to receive additional benefits for the purchase of necessary literature;
- Free use of laboratories for experiments and libraries.
