Postgraduate study is a long and responsible stage that requires considerable effort, time and self-discipline. Preparing a dissertation requires support and advice from an experienced specialist in order to improve the quality of the work and meet all the requirements for defence. How should postgraduate students choose a supervisor? What should they pay attention to? Let's have a look in our article.

Who is a research supervisor?

According to the Law of Ukraine “On Approval of the Procedure for Training Candidates for Higher Education Degrees of Doctor of Philosophy and Doctor of Science in Higher Education Institutions (Scientific Institutions)”, a research supervisor is a person who assists a graduate student with their dissertation and conducts their own scientific research. They provide advice on the content and methodology of the work, monitor the implementation of the individual plan, etc. A scientific supervisor may be appointed from among the scientific or scientific-pedagogical staff of the institution who have a scientific degree and appropriate scientific qualifications.

What to look for when choosing a scientific supervisor for graduate studies?

Specialization of the research supervisor

Find a specialist whose specialization matches your research topic. This will allow you to receive qualified support during the preparation of your work. Also, familiarize yourself with the scientific publications of the potential supervisor to understand their field of research and determine whether their interests coincide with yours.

Work experience and scientific achievements

The experience of the research supervisor in graduate school is important, as are his or her scientific achievements: publications in peer-reviewed journals, participation in conferences, scientometrics indicators. This will allow you to assess his or her ability to provide quality support and level of professionalism.

Availability for consultations

Make sure that the potential supervisor will be able to devote sufficient time to consultations. Time constraints may affect the number of possible meetings, so discuss a possible consultation schedule with them to clearly understand how much time they can devote to your work.

Communication style and support

The choice of a supervisor also depends on their communication style. Are they open to dialogue? Do they provide useful feedback? A good supervisor should respect your ideas and time, as well as be willing to explain complex issues and provide expert support when needed.

Reputation and recommendations

Don't be afraid to ask colleagues and other graduate students who have worked with a potential supervisor for advice. They can share useful information about working with them and provide an assessment of their professionalism. It is important to find out how the supervisor works with other students and whether they will be able to provide effective support at all stages of the research.
