Academic integrity is the foundation of scientific activity, the basic principles and provisions of which every scientist is obliged to adhere to. Violating them can have serious consequences for both the scientist and the educational or scientific institution. What is considered a violation of academic integrity? What are the main consequences? Let's have a look in our article.

In our previous article, we explored the basic norms of academic integrity. Below, we will look at aspects that constitute violations of these norms.

Violations of academic integrity

  1. Plagiarism. Partial or complete publication of scientific results obtained by other researchers as one's own achievements. This also includes the reproduction of works of art or texts without proper attribution to the author.
  2. Self-plagiarism. Publishing some or all of your own previously published results as new scientific achievements.
  3. Deception. Providing false information about your own educational (scientific or creative) activities or the organisation of the educational process.
  4. Fabrication. Inventing data or facts that are presented as authentic in the course of the educational process or scientific research.
  5. Falsification. Intentional distortion or alteration of existing data related to the educational process or scientific research.
  6. Cheating. Using prohibited external sources of information when completing written work, in particular when assessing learning outcomes.
  7. Bribery. Giving, receiving or offering money, property, services or other benefits in order to gain an unfair advantage in the educational process.
  8. Unfair assessment. Deliberately overestimating or underestimating the learning outcomes of students.

Consequences of violating academic integrity

The following consequences are provided for violations of academic integrity by teaching, research and academic staff:

  • refusal to award an educational-scientific or educational-creative degree, or to confer an academic title
  • deprivation of an existing educational-scientific or educational-creative level or an academic title
  • refusal to award or deprivation of an already awarded teaching title or qualification category
  • deprivation of the right to participate in the activities of bodies provided for by law or the right to hold certain positions provided for by law

In addition to the above consequences, applicants for education may be subject to the following penalties:

  • repeating an assessment (test, exam, credit, etc.)
  • repeating the relevant component of the educational programme
  • expulsion from the educational institution (except for persons receiving general secondary education)
  • loss of academic scholarship
  • loss of benefits provided by the educational institution for tuition fees

Violation of academic integrity may also be grounds for termination of an employment contract with an employee of an educational institution.

Compliance with academic integrity is the basis of a scientist's reputation and trust in their work. Violation of these norms leads to the discrediting of the scientist or educational or scientific institution and loss of authority. Whereas compliance strengthens science, increases the reliability of results and contributes to the development of new ideas.
