Preparing a thesis is a mandatory stage for the professional growth of young researchers. This process requires considerable effort and time, as the quality of the work affects the further defence process and the candidate’s obtaining an educational degree of bachelor’s or master’s. In our article, we have gathered the main stages of writing a thesis, following which will help you prepare high-quality material.

Requirements for the thesis

Before starting the preparation, it is important to familiarise yourself with the requirements of your educational institution and department (methodical guidelines, a template, assessment criteria). It is precisely overlooked aspects that most often force you to redo an already completed text. Typically, the requirements specify the structure and length of the work, formatting rules (font, spacing, numbering), requirements for the list of sources and references, and the formatting of tables, figures, and appendices. The conditions for checking academic integrity are also indicated.

Choosing the thesis topic

You should approach the choice of topic realistically. This means that there should be relevant literature sources, statistical data, or materials available for it, which will allow you to formulate specific research questions. If the topic is too broad, the thesis will provide only a superficial overview, creating the impression of a lengthy report. We recommend narrowing the topic immediately by period, territory, field, etc., because a thesis is a detailed study of one specific issue. For example, instead of “tourism development”, it is better to use “stages of tourism growth in Ukraine in 2018-2021”.

Formulating the problem, aim, and objectives

A high-quality thesis begins with a correctly formulated problem. A problem is not the general importance of the topic, but the specific problem (what is missing, gaps in previous research, and contradictions). Based on the problem, the aim of the work is formulated (what is planned to be obtained as a result) and the objectives (what steps will make it possible to achieve the desired results).

It is important that the objectives are not too general. For example, instead of “to study” or “to analyse”, you need to specify: “to analyse indicators”, “to compare approaches”, “to identify factors”, etc. This will make it easier to summarise at the end of the work and will allow you to track which objectives were completed during the research.

Searching for literature sources

Sources in a thesis are needed not for formality, but to confirm information and form a well-grounded position. It is usually appropriate to combine foundational works with classic approaches and recent publications that reflect current issues. When analysing and selecting literature, it is important to record the following: the main ideas, methods, and approaches of the author, and what exactly you will choose and use in your work.

It is worth noting that your work should not be a retelling of another author’s study; it should fill gaps in the existing materials.

Preparing the text of the work

It is advisable to organise the preparation of the thesis text as a process with a clear structure. At the initial stage, create a working document according to the template of your educational institution and compile a table of contents with future sections. We also recommend opening a separate file to keep track of sources and references. This will reduce the amount of technical editing at the end and ensure correct formatting of citations throughout the work.

We recommend starting by preparing the foundation for the text: for each subsection, define its purpose, key points, etc. After that, begin to fill them with information sequentially, guided by the recommended structure and the research topic.

Consultations with the academic supervisor

It is advisable to work on the thesis with regular consultations with your academic supervisor in order to agree on key decisions before writing the main parts of the text. During consultations, you should record the final topic and wording of the problem, the aim and objectives, the structure of sections, the methodology, data sources, and the requirements for formatting the work. The advice of an experienced supervisor will reduce the risk of rewriting the text and will allow you to prepare the work in accordance with all requirements from the outset.

Observing the principles of academic integrity

Academic integrity in thesis preparation is the basis for successfully obtaining the relevant educational degree. Any borrowed information included in the work must be accompanied by a reference to the source, even if the text has been paraphrased. We discussed the types of academic integrity violations and their consequences in more detail in our article.

The thesis preparation process can be less challenging if you follow a clear structure and avoid working chaotically, which will allow you to allocate time properly and obtain high-quality material.
