The labour market in Ukraine is transforming in line with new realities, and the list of in-demand professions is changing slightly. Today, we have compiled a list of the most in-demand professions in Ukraine in 2024. No one can say what the labour market will look like in 2 months, six months or a year, but certain predictions are already being made. Although there are a large number of applicants for such specialities as economics, philology, law, management, etc., the top most sought-after professions differ from the leading specialities for admission.

The most popular professions in Ukraine

1. Military professions.

Military professions, in particular in connection with the aggression of the Russian Federation and the full-scale invasion in 2022, have become one of the most popular in Ukraine. Given the current situation and the need to protect national security, military professions are likely to remain among the top most sought-after professions in Ukraine in the coming years. This includes both direct combat roles and allied professions related to army support, logistics, medical care and other important functions.

2. Architects and builders.

Architects and builders play an important role in the reconstruction and development of a country, especially in the face of widespread destruction caused by war. Restoration of destroyed buildings and structures is a critical task for providing housing, infrastructure and the normal functioning of society.

Also, with the processes of urbanisation and infrastructure development, the need for qualified professionals in the field of architecture and construction remains high. This includes new construction, reconstruction of existing facilities, development of transport infrastructure, construction of public buildings and other important facilities.

3. IT professionals.

Professions in the IT sector have been in the top of the most sought-after professions for many years. These professions will continue to be popular and in demand in 2024 and beyond. With the growth of digitalisation and technological progress, the demand for them is constantly increasing. Due to the war, the need for IT specialists has increased even more. For example, in 2023, computer services accounted for 41% of total exports of services, the largest share.

Among IT specialists, the following are in demand:

  • cybersecurity specialist;
  • software developers and testers;
  • artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML);
  • blockchain;
  • WEB developers and digital marketers;
  • data analysts and graphic designers;
  • application development and web development.

4. Medical professionals.

Medical professions have always been important, but in times of war, their role has increased several times. Surgeons, emergency doctors, cardiologists, nurses, physiotherapists, rehabilitation therapists, psychotherapists and psychologists have become particularly in demand. The demand for healthcare professionals is due to the growing number of wounded and sick people, as well as the need to support the psychological state of the population facing stress and trauma as a result of hostilities.

5. Energy specialists.

The destruction of energy infrastructure as a result of military operations increases the demand for energy specialists. Such specialists include engineers, electricians, maintenance technicians for power grids and energy facilities, as well as specialists in restoring power grids and infrastructure after damage, etc. The need to maintain energy facilities in a stable working condition is quite high, which increases the importance of professions related to ensuring uninterrupted power supply, repair and modernisation of electrical networks and facilities.

6. Psychologists and psychotherapists.

In recent years, demand for the services of psychologists and psychotherapists has increased in Ukraine. This is confirmed by the dynamics of Google searches: even before the war, Ukrainians searched for psychologists twice as often and psychotherapists three times as often. With the outbreak of full-scale war, these figures have at least doubled. Stress and military events cause significant damage to the mental health of society. This is especially true for the military, their families, relatives of the deceased, volunteers and people who have survived the occupation. Ordinary civilians also need the help of such specialists. However, there is already a shortage of specialists to help so many people.

Also, a military psychologist will be one of the most sought-after specialists in the field of psychology. A military psychologist plays an important role both during the war and in the post-war period. He or she helps military personnel overcome difficult life situations, including combat stress and mental trauma, by providing diagnostics and primary psychological care. The psychologist supports the moral and mental health of soldiers, helps commanders understand and manage their team, prevents negative changes in the psyche and teaches self-help and mutual assistance in combat conditions. Its work includes preparing the military for extreme conditions, reducing the impact of stressors and preventing mental disorders. In the post-war period, a military psychologist works to rehabilitate soldiers, prevent and treat post-traumatic stress disorder, and help them return to normal life.

7. Specialists in the defence industry.

The full-scale invasion of the Russian Federation and the third year of the war in Ukraine have highlighted the need to expand production and development in the defence industry, as well as to increase the number of qualified specialists. Specialists in this industry design and manufacture defence equipment, military hardware and weapons. The sector is heavily invested in the development of the latest technologies, offering high salaries and favourable conditions for qualified professionals. However, the requirements are also very high: a university degree in engineering, in-depth knowledge of specialised technologies and extensive experience in the sector are required.

8. Marketing and advertising specialists.

In 2023, the demand for marketing specialists increased by 28%, according to the DOU portal. Professionals who have online advertising skills, analyse its effectiveness, and use various tools to promote products and services are in demand. Such specialists include online marketers, targeting specialists, copywriters, social media managers, marketing managers, PR managers, and others.

9. Environmentalists.

Due to the war in Ukraine, the need for ecologists has increased significantly. Military operations and environmental disasters caused by the Russian army are causing great damage to the environment, causing soil, water and air pollution. Ecologists assess all negative impacts, develop strategies to restore the environment and prevent further environmental disasters. The work of ecologists includes monitoring the environmental situation in the regions, developing programmes to clean up and restore natural resources. One of the tasks of ecologists is to inform and advise NGOs and the government on the state of the environment, environmental safety and sustainable development.

10. Specialists in finance, accounting and auditing.

The work of financial analysts, accountants, etc. is important for the functioning of any organisation and company, as well as the country as a whole. Financial analysts analyse financial data and develop strategies for investment and financial management. The demand for these specialists remains high due to the need to make informed financial decisions in the face of market instability.

11. Logisticians.

The demand for logisticians in Ukraine has increased significantly due to the current challenges associated with the war. Logisticians play an important role in ensuring a steady supply of essential goods, including humanitarian aid and military supplies. They are responsible for planning, coordinating and controlling the movement of goods from producer to consumer, which is becoming critical. Optimisation of logistics processes and supply chain management help to reduce costs and increase the efficiency of companies.

12. Lawyers.

Lawyers are one of the most sought-after professions in Ukraine due to the significant legal challenges that have arisen as a result of the full-scale invasion. The labour market in the Legal category has not only recovered but has exceeded pre-war levels, offering more vacancies. This is due to an acute shortage of personnel, as many specialists have joined the Armed Forces, moved abroad or changed their profession. There is a particularly high demand for lawyers specialising in military law, business protection, restoration of damaged real estate, social security law for military personnel and IT law.

Military law has become one of the main trends in the legal services market, attracting significant interest from both job seekers and employers. In wartime, the legal profession is of great importance, as the consequences of war are directly related to legal issues. Employers also prefer candidates with English language skills, offering them 38% higher salaries. To overcome the shortage of staff, law firms are actively working with students by offering internships for young professionals.

13. Teachers.

The need for educators at all levels of education is enormous - from caring for babies in families and nurseries to teaching university courses. Providing appropriate education and training is becoming more challenging as the number of people willing to give their time and energy to children decreases every year. Unfortunately, there is a stereotype about the low pay of teachers, but in fact, they are willing to pay decently for quality work with the future generation, especially in the private sector. The requirements for candidates include a university degree, teaching skills, empathy, patience and a desire to constantly learn and develop.

14. Engineers.

Engineers design, develop and maintain various systems, mechanisms and devices. Due to the constant development of technology and the growing need for engineering solutions for industry, the demand for these specialists is growing every year. However, the high requirements for candidates often lead to a shortage of qualified specialists. Energy and technology engineers play a key role in the country's development. This profession is one of the most promising and contributes to sustainable development. In Ukraine, there is a particular need for qualified engineers who can contribute to the modernisation of energy systems and the introduction of the latest technologies.

15. Project managers.

The profession of project manager is in high demand in Ukraine. This is evidenced by the fact that since the beginning of 2024, there has been a 13% increase in the number of offers for project managers in Ukraine. This indicates a growing demand for qualified professionals in this field.

There are several key reasons for this:

  1. Growth of the IT industry. The IT sector in Ukraine is actively developing, which leads to an increase in the number of IT projects. Project managers in this field coordinate software development, which requires a high level of organisational and technical skills.
  2. Infrastructure projects. Ukraine is actively developing infrastructure projects, such as the construction of roads, bridges, residential complexes, etc. Project managers in these sectors are responsible for planning, controlling, and executing projects, which increases the demand for their services.
  3. Business initiatives. Many companies, including not only IT firms, but also various manufacturing and service enterprises, are implementing new projects to improve business processes, expand markets, or launch new products. Project managers help to deliver these initiatives efficiently and on schedule.
  4. International cooperation. In recent years, Ukraine has strengthened its ties with international markets, which has led to an increased need for international project managers who can effectively lead cross-cultural teams and projects.

Consequently, a project manager is a key figure in managing projects of various sizes and industries in Ukraine, making this profession in demand in the labour market.
